Lessons from a Moonflower

Lessons from a Moonflower

I almost had Joe cut it down, but I didn’t. The leaves had browned and curled. It sagged and yellowed in spots from a recent overnight frost. Yet, I wasn’t ready to have it gone. Yes, it is right by the front door and perhaps some might not find it a welcome sight, but that’s okay. I like it.

What I find profound about the moonflower is the effort it places into one bloom. It only comes out at night, and only for that one night. By morning, it is finished, but oh, what it gave for that one moment in time—everything.

The cooler temperatures have slowed the production of flowers. They are not as grand or opened as wide, but they still show up. It is Halloween today and while the frost may still be on the pumpkin, my moonflower continues to shine. It will welcome my neighbors’ children when they knock on the door. They will choose candy, but the real gift is the flower.

I’m glad Joe didn’t cut it down. Not yet, anyway.
